    Program Summary:

    Thanks to the generosity of the Educational Foundation, an outdoor education space was approved, set up, and introduced to students of three schools for environmental education within our district. Mr. B’s Backyard Classroom has continued to instill a sense of environmental awareness to students of varying grade levels. Through Mr. B’s Backyard Classroom several educators have collaborated providing hands-on activities and developing an essential understanding of local ecological concepts. The Galloway Township Middle School (GTMS), Reeds Road Elementary School, and Roland Roger’s Elementary School staff members have formed cooperative partnerships with each other, as well as local and state environmental agencies. We have continued our alliances with The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, the Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife. These alliances help us to enhance the engagement of students with their natural world, assist us in collecting quantitative and qualitative environmental data, and promote the educational opportunities that our Galloway Township students are experiencing. This initiative has helped to fill the void left when field trips were eliminated by providing chances to take “class trips” to an aquatic oasis. It also keeps learners actively engaged in their local environment. Highlights included class visits by fourth through seventh grade students, a wide variety of wildlife sightings, and collaborations with community agencies including: US Fish & Wildlife Services, Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge, New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors, Galloway Go Green, and The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. The year culminated with the successful fourth annual Nature Fest, in which more than eight hundred students rotated through stations of student led projects, community information booths, and outdoor educational experiences. Mr. B’s Backyard Classroom affirms the abundance of learning opportunities that can take place in this hands-on, outdoor classroom. Another year, of support from the Galloway Township Education Foundation, will enable us to continue to expand this program to include the entire seventh grade science class.

    Description of Implementation Below is the web site for our solar panels, this is the same information that the students and community members see on the screen in the front of our school entrance You can click on the tabs to change the display information. http://siteapp.fatspaniel.net/siteapp/simpleView.jsf?eid=340336 In 2008, The Galloway Township Public Schools, Board of Education & Community elected to move forward with the installation of a solar generation system to their 150,000 square foot Middle School (Galloway Twp. Middle School. Specks were drawn and the project went out to bid. Research was done greats, rebates and reduction in energy savings. In October of 2008 a rebate was approve by the New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program. November, 2008 our architect of design presented the district with a photovoltaic project cost worksheet with simplified payback. In 2009, a flat roof mounted 305.670 kWDC photovoltaic generation system was installed. This system is comprised of 1329 modules feeding into 93 strings, each with 13 Sharp ND-U230C1 along with multi-crystalline silicon modules in series with a maximum nominal voltage of 500VDC. The PVPowered inverter system consists of a DC disconnect, a PVPowered 260 or 30 kW inverter and AC disconnect. The output of the two 3-phase 480 VAC inverters is routed through two 3-phase 480 VAC isolation transformers. And a 600 amp AC distribution panel via one 50 amp & one 400 amp breaker are connected to the line side of our existing 480V distribution panel. Power from this net metering system in connected on the buildings side of an Atlantic City Electric revenue grade electric meter. This system to be in operation and continuously monitored by our Energy Coordinator for proper operations, along with monthly reports & readings for NJSREC rebates.

    Breakfast After the Bell

    Program Summary:

    BREAKFAST AFTER THE BELL In August 2012 we started a Breakfast Committee to try to boost participation of breakfast in the schools. The committee consisted of teachers, principals, vice principals, nurses, custodial and food service to come up with a plan to start breakfast after the bell. Participation has increased each year we started the program. By the end of June of 2012 participation was 50.16%, then by the end of June of 2014 it had increased to 73.04%. This gave us an increase of 22.88% district wide. To move things along in September of 2014 we started a kiosk at the Middle Schools for Grab N Go breakfasts. So students at the Middle School after getting off their busses or being dropped off go either straight to the cafeteria or the kiosks, get their breakfast, then head to their homerooms to eat their breakfasts. Students in the elementary levels get off their busses or are dropped off by parents and go straight to the cafeteria after the bell rings and enter the serving lines. In order to promote our program we sent flyers out and included it on our webpage. We also attended Back to School Night, Family Community Night and the Wellness Fair to promote breakfast and make parents and their students aware of the program. Since starting this program it has decreased the visits to nurses and decreased students’ tardiness because they look forward to a hot breakfast.

    Program Summary:

    The Galloway Township Public Schools are actively involved in a recycle program and have been for over 25 years. This includes but not limited to recycle containers in every classroom, office space, kitchen & cafeteria, hall etc. The Galloway Township Middle School (GTMS) has been a large part of this program since it has it’s opening in 2000. The district continues to educate its staff and students on best recycling practices. The middle school has also formed a committee to receive training and monitor recycling throughout the building. The Galloway Township Public School has also entered into an energy management program back in May of 2007 and continues to date. This program would aid the district in energy savings and utility bill tracking. By hiring an Energy Education Specialist, we can now monitor and track our energy usages. Our staff and students can be educated on energy conservation along with best practices. The district is always looking for more areas to improving on energy savings. The district also utilizes a computerized energy management system to control its HVAC in every classroom, office space, cafeteria, gym etc. throughout our middle school along with the rest of its school buildings to optimize the most energy saving as possible while maintaining a healthy environment.

    Energy Audit

    Program Summary:

    Description of Implementation (Energy Audit) Beginning in May, 2007 to date, our board approved Energy Coordinator has implemented an energy auditing program throughout the Galloway Township Public School District. This includes the following locations: • Arthur Rann Elementary School • Board of Education Office • Galloway Twp. Middle School • Oceanville Facilities Building • Pomona Preschool • Reeds Road Elementary School • Roland Rogers Elementary School • Smithville Elementary School The Energy Coordinator preforms building inspections weekly throughout the district. These random inspections are done at various times such as days, nights, weekends and even holidays to insure that district adopted energy saving guidelines are met. A written report of these audits is then given to concerned parties. Post-it notes are also left as a reminder where a violation has been found. Guidelines during occupied hours: • All windows & doors will remain closed when HVAC is in operation. • No non instructional appliances are to be used in classrooms. • Reframe from using any unnecessary lighting etc. • Occupied cooling set points will range between 74 to 78 degrees (as per ASHRAE code 55). • Occupied heating set points will range between 68 to 72 degrees (as per ASHRAE code 55). Guidelines during unoccupied hours: • All windows & doors are to be closed & locked. • Pull down all window shades. • Turn off all classroom lighting. • Turn off all computers, monitors, printers and speakers. • Turn off all copy machines, calculators, laminating equipment etc. • Where applicable adjust thermostats to 85 degrees in cooling season and 55 degrees in heating season.

    Energy Tracking & Management

    Program Summary:

    Description of Implementation (Energy Tracking & Management) In May of 2007, the Galloway Township Public Schools signed a contract with an energy management consulting firm (Energy Education Inc.). A total district inventory of all energy consuming equipment, bills, usage, building square footage etc. was established. This information was then loaded into a date base (Energy CAP Pro) and broken down for each building. As per contract with Energy Ed., the district would also have to appoint an energy coordinator to assist with date collected, input, and monitoring of energy usage on a monthly bases. The energy coordinator would receive various training courses in best energy saving practices, educating others and reporting findings. In order to make a valid apples to apples comparison from the start of our energy program in 2007. Prier data was collected from 2006 so that a baseline year could be created. Certain criteria would have to be taken into account: • Change in weather. • Change in building square footage and usage. • Differences in the length of the building periods and rates. The primary goal of the energy coordinator is to: • Maintain comfort & safety in occupied areas. • Eliminate energy waste. • Save dollars. The districts energy Coordinator monitors the utility bills at all 7 of our locations monthly for: • Consumption • Cost • Rates This is an ongoing process that allows the energy coordinator to: • Track the overall usage for the district as a whole. • Monitor each of our schools individually. • Compare month to month usage. These finding can then be addressed, reported and corrected to reach peak efficiency for each building. The data that is attached is for GTMS, Galloway Township MS - Galloway Township Middle School.     Healthy Food Choices Beyond the Cafeteria

    Program Summary:

    GTMS recognizes that child and adolescent obesity has reached epidemic levels in the United States and that poor diet combined with the lack of physical activity negatively impacts on students’ health, and their ability and motivation to learn. GTMS is committed to: A. Providing students with healthy and nutritious foods; B. B. Encouraging the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, low fat milk, and whole grains; C. Supporting healthy eating through nutrition education; D. Encouraging students to select and consume all components of the school meal; and E. Providing students with the opportunity to engage in daily physical activity. In addition, we have collaborated with our parent organization - FSA to discontinue the sales of candy and any other unhealthy foods/snacks as a fundraiser. The school and FSA no longer allow our students to sell candy lollipops, candy bars, candy grams during school or even during after school hours. New fundraisers that we added this year included Yankee Candle and The Light Switch Project. We have also exchanged our soda machine for a water and juice machine that provides students with more healthy choices. During our evening events bottled water is the only drink we sell and healthy snacks are always available for purchase. (trail mix, pretzels, baked chips).     School Gardens

    Program Summary:

    Since 2012, the Grizzly Garden, as the garden at the Galloway Township Middle School is fondly called, has offered a natural and healthy way of living that was created, sustained and shared by the students, staff, families and community of Galloway Township. Located within the protected confines of one of our school’s courtyards, the Grizzly Garden has over 2,600 square feet of planting space. It is a place where students, staff and community members can relax and enjoy the flowers, fish pond, a growing family of box turtles and various wild birds. Our garden provides a natural environment where students, staff and community members can learn about and enjoy a sustainable and healthy way of existence. It offers a wide variety of vegetables and fruits that are not only enjoyed at harvest time, but year round. Its caretakers weed, plant, harvest, preserve and cook the fruits of their labor. Not only does our middle school family enjoy our garden, but students and staff from our neighboring elementary schools who are in our summer programs, visit to learn about gardening, living things, composting, and embracing a sustainable lifestyle. Thanks to our Grizzly Garden these activities and the learning which is achieved, tie in nicely with our district's core values of respect, hard work, integrity, diversity, communication and excellence.     10 Points School District

    Program Summary:

    The Galloway Township community, as part of the Atlantic City regional area, has experienced extensive job loss and economic decline due to the closing of multiple casinos and related businesses. The school district has seen the impact in various ways including, but not limited to: an increase in students qualifying for free/reduced meals, students not having basic necessities and/or school supplies, family stress evidenced by visits to the school counselor/social worker, unmet medical needs shown by visits to the school nurse, and transiency in students entering and exiting the district. As Superintendent of Schools, I was invited to join the Atlantic County Agency Summit to coordinate efforts to assist people in need. This resulted in our district deciding to conduct a family outreach called a “Support Summit.” Held on February 5, 2015, at Galloway Township Middle School, this event brought together social service agencies (e.g. United Way, Family Services Association), banking/mortgage companies (Clarifi, TD), colleges (Stockton University, Atlantic Cape Community College), businesses (Icon Hospitality, Integrity Transportation), and the school district (Human Resources, Food Services, Students Services) in one place to help families experiencing difficulty. Although there are many services and programs available, people are not always sure how to make contact or what actually exists. By holding the Support Summit, families could come to one location to gain information and assistance to help pay bills, save their homes, find employment, identify job-retraining programs, and the like. The feedback we received was quite positive, and we continue to share information about available programs and services through our website and social media. Our goal is continue hosting this event to help sustain our community members and support our students in difficult times. In addition, this summer we have extended our outreach to our families. We are working with the law firm Cooper Levenson and the USDA to provide families in need with food for their families. Our school is hosting this meal plan, where are families can receive free food on Mondays in order to prepare healthy foods for the week (potatoes, fresh vegetables and fruit).

    10 Points School District

    Program Summary:

    There have been a number of projects and events that our students have taken part in throughout the school year that demonstrates their eagerness to create a school climate that is positive, supportive and welcoming to the community, while promoting the importance of protecting the environment. During our 2015 Open House we felt compelled to highlight the number of sustainable activities that our students participate in while at GTMS to our incoming 6th graders as well as our community members. From selling plants from the Grizzly Garden, selling homemade doggie treats, handmade jewelry and reusable bags, show casing healthy eating habits as well as how to continue to stay fit, the night was a success. We continued this initiative through to the end of the school year, participating in the LightSwitch Project fundraiser (selling over 400 LED light bulbs), partnering with Atlantic and the LGPA (Cheyenne Woods and Alison Lee) to garden with our students with multiple disabilities as well as starting a Twitter account (@GTMS_Respect) where we have been highlighting the work our students are doing throughout the summer to be environmentally friendly. We plan to continue to use our Twitter account throughout the school year to promote our schools sustainability actions so that we can display the wonderful appreciation our students have with their school and community.

    Curriculum Mapping

    Program Summary:

    Galloway Township Middle School Galloway Township has taken pride in its effort to continually align the curriculum of instruction with the Common Core. Our motto, “Children and learning come first,” exemplifies our efforts to ready our students for the standards, ensuring a successful future for all. With this in mind, prior to the implementation of the Common Core, Galloway searched for a new standardized textbook for English Language Arts. In our search, we came across the Holt McDougal Literature series and began to launch a new curriculum. However, before doing so, teachers from both seventh and eighth grade volunteered to sample the text and begin writing the curriculum for the middle school. Over the summer months, these teachers planned the start of new instruction. Having once been a novel-based curriculum, teachers worked on supplementing the old instructional model with the new. This planning allowed us to find a balance and rethink our questioning techniques to improve materials we already had instead of investing in an entirely new “library of resources.” Noticing the length of the curriculum, based on three models of instruction: Advanced; Regular; and Special Education, the teachers decided to upload the curriculum map electronically. This also allowed teachers to attach additional resources to the document. For example, any known graphic aids were readily available for use on the document camera or computer. This readily accessible document allows for consistency across our Teams and grade levels. By using a common literature series and curriculum guide, teachers starting in the elementary schools and finishing in the middle school have seen an increase in our students’ prior knowledge. Less time has been spent on re-teaching elements and students are grasping concepts quicker from year to year. The curriculum map has allowed teachers to push the curriculum further, getting the students ready for their future education.

    Biodiversity Project

    Program Summary:

    Mr. Guy Buckelew dedicated 14 years to the youth of Galloway Township. Teaching sixth grade at Reeds Road Elementary School, he instilled a sense of environmental awareness to his students. He attempted to bring the outdoors in and instructed utilizing these natural elements. Through Mr. B’s Backyard Classroom, our retention pond has been transformed into an arena to provide hands-on activities to develop an essential understanding of local ecological concepts. The Galloway Township Middle School (GTMS), Reeds Road Elementary School, and Roland Roger’s Elementary School staff members have formed collaborative partnerships with each other, as well as local and state environmental agencies. The importance of living a “Green” lifestyle and the promotion of conserving Galloway’s ecosystems is expanding utilizing our own school grounds. Mr. B’s Backyard Classroom was established during the 2010-2011 school year. Mr. B’s Backyard Classroom supplements the everyday classroom learning with chances to take “class trips” to an aquatic oasis.

    'Green' Your Green Fair or School Event

    Program Summary:

    Throughout the school year we have made a concerted effort to become more 'Green' and to rethink the way we fund raise, handle extra food in the cafe as well as how we portray our school community to the community. Through the following events we feel as though we have begun to change the climate of our school to being more resourceful and sustainable. We have begun to make an impact in our students and teachers lunch disposable practices. In conjunction with our Student Council, environmental club and our food service manager we have learned a lot this year and look forward to making adjustments to our practices for next year. This year we have replaced the teachers Styrofoam trays with reusable trays, starting recycling milk cartons, and juice can tabs. We have always provided students with a recycling can for cans, but now we have students assisting with the recycling process during each lunch period. In addition, our students have a station for unopened graham crackers, juice containers and fresh fruit which is donated to our local church. This program has given us the opportunity to reflect upon our practices and encouragement to make an impact.

    Civic & Stewardship Volunteer Initiatives

    Program Summary:

    Throughout the school year, GTMS students and staff take part in a variety of civic and stewardship activities supporting their community. Our students have the opportunity to engage in school based activities, collaborate with local organizations within their community as well as organize fund raising efforts for local and national charities that are of interest to them. At GTMS we have an amazing Student Council and Builder’s Club which meet after school on a monthly basis to coordinate fund raising and volunteer efforts within their school community. Students have participated in food and clothing drives, Blood drives, road and beach clean-ups as well as volunteered at Spring Village, an assisted living establishment. In addition, students have organized school wide activities to raise money for local charities, for example GTMS Cares day, Alex's Lemonade and Bubbles 4 Austin. The volunteer work our students participate in is preparing them for the future, while improving their community.

    Program Summary:

    GTMS and Sustainable Galloway Go Green Team - Reusable Bag Campaign This school year (2014-15) the Galloway Township Middle School (GTMS) Environmental Club was shown the movie, “Bag It”. After viewing and discussing the film, the club’s Advisor and Galloway Go Green Team Liaison representative asked the members what they wanted to do with this new learned information. The event was open to the general public and advertised across the community. You will see in the link below that while our students were watching a live link of an osprey nest in Atlantic City, an osprey brought a mylar balloon into the nest for his family. This was a perfect example supporting our efforts on Earth Day to host this event. You can also see in the video that the nest already had some litter tucked in for comfort. We felt that we could try to make an impact with the younger children and their parents if they knew more about this. Since GTMS has been involved with AtlantiCare, we felt that they were a great resource to use to catapult this idea. It started with contacting local health vendors from dentists to chiropractors to nutritionists. We sent them an invitation to participate with no charge for their attendance. When advertised, we had health vendors calling and asking to participate. It takes a great deal of planning and organization as well as people to see it happen. The teachers and staff have made that commitment and it works. It is a great way to let the local as well as near by towns show their services and get publicity. The night is for all ages and everyone has a wonderful time. We started with a small idea and it has grown. Our hope is to make it even bigger and better. Thanks to AtlantiCare and our local health professionals, it works.

    Enrichment Programs through Partnership

    Program Summary:

    Through a collaborative relationship with Stockton University (SU), starting this summer, the Summer Learning Program (SLP) will become the Galloway & Stockton Collaborative PD School. Using Title 1 funds, the program will continue to offer targeted instruction for over 250 Title 1 Galloway students and employ approximately 25 Galloway teachers. New this year will be the opportunity for our teachers to work in a collaborative lesson study model along with our TLFs, administrators, Stockton fieldwork students and professors. In addition to our primary goal of closing the achievement gap, we will be examining elements of the Danielson rubric with a focus on its measures of highly effective instruction. Supporting this endeavor will be the application of video lesson reflection. Coordinated as well, a three credit graduate course on coaching and collaborations is being offered by Stockton free of charge as an option to our participants.

    Green Challenges

    Program Summary:

    Galloway Township Middle School and Sustainable Galloway Go Green Team Annual Recycle Bowl The last three years, Galloway Township Middle School (GTMS) has participated in Keep America Beautiful Recycle Bowl Competition. The first two years (2012 and 2013) the school principal would kick off the competition with addressing the student body via the GMTV morning program. Then all the students would sign a pledge to recycle in school and at home. They would keep this pledge in their Agenda books throughout the school year. At the end of each day, students would carry the classroom recycling to the large recycling container in their hallway. This continued throughout the competition. The 2014 school year, the GTMS Environmental Club, its Advisor and Galloway Go Green Team School Liaison decided to run the Recycle Bowl Competition. It was decided that the club members would follow the procedures as in the past. In addition, the Environmental Club Advisor and the School Liaison Representative shared the results of June 2014 Waste Audit for GTMS conducted by Atlantic County Utilities Authority. The club members recognized from the report that the school cafeteria needed to improve the recycling procedures. They, along with the school principal, the cafeteria employees, and maintenance/housekeeping workers set up procedures to increase the recycling of beverage containers (milk cartons, cans, and juice containers). The results of the Recycle Bowl Competition for GTMS yielded 4.19 pounds per capita of recycling, while last year’s results were 3.60 pounds per capita. We believe this increase is due largely to the cafeteria procedures carried out by the Environmental Club members. They are committed to seeing that these practices continue throughout the school year. Our students produced and directed 3 commercials that were shown on our GMTV show as a kick-off of our recycling campaign.     Green Fair

    Program Summary:

    Each year since 2011, GTMS has held an annual Nature Fest. We start out with our students selecting a topic that interests them. Most topics are about South Jersey’s ecosystems and organisms. Other topics students research are recycling, watersheds, water conservation and environmental awareness. Students then conduct research and put together a lesson to be taught to the visitors. Students use their backboards to display facts, provide hands on materials, or organisms, play games, etc. to teach their facts to the visitors. This celebration of our outdoor classroom and student achievements will bring together three schools Reeds Road Elementary School (grades 4 – 6), Roland Rogers Elementary School (grades 4 – 6) and Galloway Township Middle School (grades 7 and 8), and numerous outside environmental organizations, involving over 1500 students and community visitors. Some of the organizations that have participated over the years are: US Fish & Wildlife, Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge, Sustainable Galloway Go Green Team, NJ Forest Fire, ACUA, Stockton College, American Water Company to name a few.     Green Team

    Program Summary:

    The GTMS Green Team is committed to incorporating sustainability practices into our teaching and best practices in an effort to becoming more green and less wasteful. A school that is characterized by rigorous expectations, strong leadership, exceptional teaching, research-based instruction, and supportive parent and community involvement we believe in supporting an environment of sustainability. Throughout the school year we will be supporting the staff in a number of different activities related to staff and student wellness, recycling efforts, service learning projects, Go Green events and cross-curricular projects that focus on environmental health and safety. By helping our school incorporate sustainable practices, we can reduce operating costs and environmental impacts, while promoting a healthy environment for students and staff. Our goal is to continue our efforts to become a more sustainable school supporting the efforts of the school based Green Team as well as the Go Green Team of Galloway Township. We have built great relationships and wish to continue to build them to benefit our schools.

    Education for Sustainability Grades 4-12 English Language Arts

    Program Summary:

    In the 7th grade LLD program, ELA curriculum at GTMS the students began investigations the factors which cause air pollution and became interested in eliminating the pollution from exhaust from cars./ They began investigating electric cars because of the zero emissions and an interest from their teacher. They looked at how cars are powered and can be charged. They found various models that were available and the range of travel per charge from different vehicles. We invited the Tesla company to bring a car to our school by writing letters to the company. Finally, we had a local resident who owned a Tesla bring their car to our school for us to observe the car. Pictures are included in the submission. We tried to have charging stations installed on our school property, but ran into red tape when it came to laws governing school property. We put together a research simulation task suing electric cars as the theme. the lessons covered math, science, reading and writing. The language arts class in our team also took the RST as a language arts activity and the combined results are included.

    Program Summary:

    Sustainability Lesson The Real Cost of a Water Bottle Lesson taught week of May 11, 2015 Description of Implementation: The lesson, “The Real Cost of a Water Bottle” was taught to seventh grade classes during the week of May 11th. Students were surprised about the large scale pollution that is happening due to water bottles. They did some research in pairs and then shared their results with the class. An entire class graph was created about how many bottles each student’s family used in one year. Totals were tallied and discussed. Then students came up with possible solutions to the water bottle problem. Students decided to try to use more reusable water bottles and to make a point of recycling regular water bottles. I think students are more aware of the problem now and will make an attempt to make better choices.

    Program Summary:

    Macro invertebrates are very small organisms, but one can see with the eye. Mr. B’s is a very good place to see micro invertebrates and a great place for their environment in our ponds. Macro invertebrates are spineless, and are a group of many different organisms. The lesson was taught by Mullica River Watershed Ambassador, Jessica. The Watershed ambassador along with some students got samples out of the pond. Then students tried to identify the different organisms using an Identification Guide to Freshwater Macro invertebrates. Some of the organisms they saw are dragonflies, damselfly and mayfly nymphs, freshwater snails, and water boatmen to name a few. Students were surprised to learn how long some of the organisms could live part of their life underwater. Did you know dragonfly nymphs may live up to 4 years in the pond?!     Program Summary:

    Welcome to Mr. B's Backyard Classroom Field Guide. Each student selected a topic to research and publish onto this Wiki.The general information describes the local ecosystems that include the Pinelands, vernal ponds, watersheds and how these ponds are a part of the Mullica River Watershed. All other students selected an organisim. These organisims may be found in Mr. B"s Backyard Classroom or the surrounding areas; year round or in certain seasons. Since this is only our fourth year exploring the area, we are still not sure of all of the species that may be found for sure in Mr. B's Backyard Classroom, but all of the species selected are native to South Jersey or visit our area.* Visit: http://mrbsbackyardclassroomfieldguide2015.wikispaces.com/ To view our students individual wiki pages Also our School Science Blog: http://mrbsbackyardclassroom.weebly.com/blog Our second Technology based lesson involves the creation of QR codes that visitors are able to use while int he outside classroom to learn about the wildlife. With the use of a smartphone or an iPad, you can download a QR App that will allow you to scan the QR codes located throughout the pond. Our science teacher collaborated with our technology teacher to develop these codes, and the students provided the details to create the brochure. If someone does not have a smart phone there is a brochure that has been created for those individuals.

    Programs to Promote Physical Activity

    Program Summary:

    The GTMS works collaboratively to provide our students with a variety of activities that promote physical activity whether it is before, during or after school. Although we have not officially started one of the 'Best Practice Programs' listed for this Action, we have decided to apply for a District Funded Grant in order to partner with the Play 60 program for next year. The goal is to provide each student with their own pedometer and promote physical fitness among the students as well as the staff with a variety of school wide competitions. We did decide to provide you with the many other activities and programs that we have here at GTMS that we feel as though promote physical fitness, that would match or exceed any of the programs that you have listed. Our staff members have been phenomenal role models for fitness this school year, taking part in walking competitions, healthy eating initiatives and fundraisers that promote walking throughout the school day.

    School Health Assessment

    Program Summary:

    Participating in the School Health Assessment had a positive impact on our school. Working with the school health team to assess the school and answer the questions for each module fostered deep and meaningful conversations about our school climate and it's overall believe in healthy living. We were able to identify a number of areas that we feel as though as worth delving into and improving. We have decided to meet with the faculty about these areas of improvement and bringing them into the process.

    School Wellness Council

    Program Summary:

    At this time, The School Wellness Council at GTMS consists of teachers, nurses, parent, and administration. We don’t meet often, but talk/email all the time about the ideas we are implementing in our school, how to complete the ideas and what can make them better etc. The March Walking Challenge has evolved into what it is now because of the input from this council meeting informally. Most of our council is competing in our biggest loser competition and they have all participated in our cardio classes and walking clubs. They also talk up all that we are doing to get others involved. In previous years, the School Wellness Council held meetings and discussed ideas for getting students to become more active. With childhood obesity being a major health issue in our country, getting the students of our school to become healthier became a top priority. Adding to the physical education curriculum was a great way to reach every student in the school. A fitness unit was added; this comprised of virtual workout DVDs such as Wii Active, Wii Fit and Just Dance, a rock climbing wall, and the addition of a fitness room. In this fitness room, students work out in stations consisting of stationary cardio bikes, Bosu balls, stability balls, kettle bells, dumbbells, resistance bands and yoga stretches. The implementation of these activities and equipment was a success. Students have a variety of resources now to be active and understand the importance of a healthy, fit lifestyle.

    Staff Wellness Program

    Program Summary:

    We receive a grant with the goal being for our staff members to become healthier by lowering their BMI, body weight or blood pressure by participating in group fitness classes, healthier eating habits and stress management techniques over the course of the school year. We started off the year by taking a Staff Wellness Survey which showed areas of need for our staff. We met as a school Health Team to talk about different ways to meet our goals. One of the ways was a Biggest Loser competition, which we started in January. We are not just using this competition for weight loss, but in decreasing BMI. To enhance the competition, the teachers received a note in the mail box or on their classroom door encouraging Healthy living. Examples of those things….DID YOU KNOW FACT about drinking water aiding in weight loss, 12 Healthy Benefits of Dark Chocolate, advise about apps you can use on your phone or iPad to encourage healthy eating or walking/exercise programs. Our school even started a GTMS Wellness Group Board on Pinterest.

    Materials Reuse

    Program Summary:

    Galloway Township Middle School will be participating in the ShoeBox Recycling Program throughout the school year. Within 2 days of promoting the program on our student GMTV station, we had filled one large barrel full of shoes. We are excited about continuing this program and using it as a way to introduce Service learning and Sustainability to our incoming 7th graders this summer. We asked our incoming 7th graders to donate their old shoes as they begin to start a new journey at the middle school on August 18th. Our current Student Council Cabinet had joined us to assist in the collection of over 175 pairs of lightly worn shoes. We strongly believe that if she show our students the importance of service learning and sustainability as they enter middle school, then they will begin to take ownership and pride in their school and the many initiatives that we support. We plan to continue this service learning project through the beginning of the school year, allowing our 8th graders to participate as well. We will use our district website and our school Twitter @GTMS_Respect to continue to advertise for this event.

    Waste Audit

    Program Summary:

    A waste audit was performed bu Ken McGowan from the Atlantic County Utilities Authority at the end of the 2013-2014 school year. This audit was the result of the continued work of Ro Goldberg of Sustainable Galloway's Go Green Team and by Debby Sommers GTMS Environmental Teacher. Together with the Environmental Club they reached out to the ACUA to review their work within the school and to gain additional suggestions on how to improve the sustainability of the GTMS school community. As a direct result of this report, our Environmental Club has taken on several initiatives this school year to improve our recycling. One action they took was creating a better process for plastic bottles, juice cans and adding the recycling of milk carton during our lunches.
