Apply to be a PowerSave School! Get free support and resources to educate students about energy efficiency and save money on your school's energy costs.
Sustainable Jersey is partnering with New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) and the Alliance to Save Energy to bring the PowerSave Schools program to 35 schools within NJNG's service territory. Twenty-two (22) schools are returning for another year in the program and 13 additional schools will be admitted for the 2019-20 school year. NJNG will fund the direct program costs for the 35 schools, while the Alliance will lead implementation of the PowerSave program in schools, providing the tools and resources to ensure a successful program outcome, including access to the new emPowered web platform.
The Alliance will select 13 schools registered with Sustainable Jersey for Schools and located within NJNG’s Service Territory to join the 22 returning schools to participate in the PowerSave Schools program. Created by the Alliance, this program helps elementary, middle, and high school students learn about and embrace energy efficiency and conservation in their academic environment. Moreover, it helps participating schools save money and energy through changes in behavior, operations and maintenance procedures, and by encouraging the use of more energy-efficient equipment.
PowerSave Schools Program Funded for 13 New Schools & 22 Returning Schools
PowerSave Schools will directly engage students in the 35 participating schools for one year, integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) principles to promote energy literacy through lesson plans, activities and competitions. Students will use the school building as a learning lab to solve real world problems and generate cultural change by making energy efficiency visible, important and doable.
The PowerSave activities are parallel to action items under Sustainable Jersey for Schools, with the opportunity for schools to earn points toward certification while integrating student and faculty engagement that results in innovative energy-efficiency projects and ideas for best practices from which other schools can learn.
Schools must be located within NJNG’s service territory and registered with Sustainable Jersey for Schools to be eligible. Fifteen additional schools will be selected to participate from among the eligible applicants. See the complete eligibility requirements and application form here.
