Apply to be a PowerSave School! Get free support and resources to educate students about energy efficiency and save money on your school's energy costs.
Sustainable Jersey is partnering with South Jersey Gas (SJG) and the Alliance to Save Energy (The Alliance) to bring the PowerSave Schools program to 40 schools within the SJG service territory. Eleven (11) schools are returning for another year in the program and 29 additional schools will be admitted for the 2019-20 school year. SJG will fund the direct program costs for the 40 schools, while The Alliance will lead implementation of the PowerSave program in schools, providing the tools and resources to ensure a successful program outcome, including access to the new empowered web platform.
The Alliance will select 29 schools located within SJG’s Service Territory to join the 11 returning schools to participate in the PowerSave Schools program. Created by The Alliance, this program helps elementary, middle, and high school students learn about and embrace energy efficiency and conservation in their academic environment. Moreover, it helps participating schools save money and energy through changes in behavior, operations and maintenance procedures, and by encouraging the use of more energy-efficient equipment.
PowerSave Schools Program Funded for 29 New Schools & 11 Returning Schools
PowerSave Schools will directly engage students in the 40 participating schools for one year, integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) principles to promote energy literacy through lesson plans, activities and competitions. Students will use the school building as a learning lab to solve real world problems and generate cultural change by making energy efficiency visible, important and doable.
The PowerSave activities are parallel to action items under Sustainable Jersey for Schools, with the opportunity for schools to earn points toward certification while integrating student and staff engagement that results in innovative energy-efficiency projects and ideas for best practices from which other schools can learn.
This program is open to both public and private schools located within SJG’s service territory. Choice priority will be given to schools that are registered with Sustainable Jersey for Schools. Twenty-nine additional schools will be selected to participate from among the eligible applicants. See the complete eligibility requirements and application form here.
