Small Grants Program Eligibility Requirements

Two funding opportunities are currently available with slightly different eligibility requirements. Review the eligibility requirements for the Gardinier and NJEA cycles.

2017 Gardinier Grant Cycle

  • Be a New Jersey public school district registered with Sustainable Jersey for Schools AND have an active Green Team that meets program standards.
  • Eligible expenses include: salaries, contractor/consultant costs, equipment, materials, and supplies.  Facilities and administrative (overhead) costs may not be charged to the grant.
  • Municipalities are limited to ONE grant application.
  • Joint municipal government and school district projects are encouraged. For joint projects, each entity may submit a separate $30,000 or $10,000 grant application addressing its role in the project.

NJCEP/Utility-Sponsored Incentive Programs

Proposed grant projects that would be eligible for funding or rebates available from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities Clean Energy Program (NJCEP), regional utility company programs, or other state government incentive programs must leverage these resources in addition to the Sustainable Jersey Small grant as part of the overall budget.  We strongly encourage all applicants to coordinate with the NJCEP at 866-657-6278 or visit their website, prior to submitting the application

NOTE: As part of the grant application, you must document communication with the relevant NJCEP and utility-sponsored incentive programs and receive confirmation that the project does or does not qualify for existing incentives.  Confirmation of the dollar amount of the funding is not required, just the eligibility of the project.  For more information, see the Application Information Packet.

LIGHTING UPGRADES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING.

Previous Grant Recipients

  • School districts that were already awarded a $10,000 grant in previous 2017 Sustainable Jersey grant cycles are NOT eligible to apply for a grant in this cycle.

2017 NJEA Small Grants Cycle

  • Be a New Jersey Public School District or School that is registered with the Sustainable Jersey for Schools program with a NJEA local association, AND have appointed a Green Team that meets the Green Team action standard

$10,000 Applicants

  • School districts and individual schools are each eligible to apply for one $10,000 grant. District applications should focus on programs or projects that benefit more than one school. Applications submitted by individual schools should focus on school-level initiatives. For example, the Elmhurst School District could apply for a grant to integrate sustainability concepts across the curriculum and Elmhurst High School could apply for a grant to complete a biodiversity project on its school grounds.

$2,000 Applicants

  • Each Sustainable Jersey for Schools registered school can submit one $2,000 grant proposal.

Previous Grant Recipients

  • School districts or individual schools that were already awarded a $10,000 grant in 2017 are NOT eligible to apply for a $10,000 grant in this cycle.
  • Schools that have already received a $2,000 or $4,000 Sustainable Jersey grant in 2017 are NOT eligible to apply for a $2,000 grant in this cycle.
  • 2015 and 2016 Sustainable Jersey for Schools $10,000 or $30,000 grant recipients must have completed the grant project, submitted the final report, and received confirmation from Sustainable Jersey that it has been approved in order to be eligible to apply for this grant.
  • Schools that received a $2,000 or $4,000 Sustainable Jersey small grant in 2015 or 2016 are eligible to apply for a $2,000 grant in this cycle provided that the 2015 or 2016 grant has been closed. This means that all the work associated with the grant has been completed and the final report was submitted and approved.

Important Note about Energy-Related Projects

For this cycle, energy related projects ARE NOT eligible for funding. However, they are eligible for funding other Sustainable Jersey's separate grants cycle funded by the Gardinier Environmental Fund that is focused specifically on energy initiatives.  For more information on energy related grants, click here.
