Sustainable Jersey for Schools Announces the First 59 Schools to Achieve Sustainability Certification

on Sep 28, 2015

Egg Harbor Twp., Cherry Hill, Medford, Readington and Wayne school districts exemplify sustainability leadership

Sustainable Jersey for Schools announced today the fifty-nine schools that are the first-ever to achieve the Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification. These schools are the pioneers that can forever boast that they were the first, having achieved certification in year one of the program. Five school districts emerge as sustainability leaders by successfully supporting the efforts of multiple schools in their district to achieve program certification. The five standout school districts are: Egg Harbor Township, Cherry Hill, Medford, Readington and Wayne. Schools collaborate with their district to complete actions, upload documentation and achieve certification.

Egg Harbor Township School District Superintendent Dr. Scott McCartney said, “I am very proud of our school family for their hard work to create environmentally sound and sustainable practices in all aspects of our operation. The fact that all of our schools are being recognized is a testament to the dedication we have to this cause. Our sustainable practices not only save money for our taxpayer but they educate our students to be good stewards of the environment and conserve valuable resources. We are very appreciative of the recognition and for the work Sustainable Jersey is doing across New Jersey with schools and communities.”

Sustainable Jersey for Schools is voluntary, but achieving certification is not easy. Each school that is certified at the bronze-level must submit documentation to show it has completed a balanced portfolio of the program’s sustainability actions, attaining a minimum of 150 points. Five schools achieved certification at the more advanced silver-level, these stand-out schools include: Egg Harbor Township High School (Egg Harbor Township School District), Galloway Township Middle School (Galloway Township School District), Bret Harte Elementary School (Cherry Hill School District), Three Bridges Elementary School (Readington Township School District) and Whitehouse Elementary School (Readington Township School District). Silver-level certification requires that a school reach a minimum of 350 points.

“Becoming certified with Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a significant achievement for schools and their school district,” said Donna Drewes who co-directs Sustainable Jersey with Randall Solomon. “We’re thrilled with the number of schools that achieved certification in this first year of the Sustainable Jersey for Schools program and we share this success with the eight partner organizations that have joined us in this effort.”

The Sustainable Jersey for Schools program partners include: New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA), New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA), New Jersey Association of School Business Officials (NJASBO), New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), New Jersey Parent Teacher Association (NJPTA), New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA), New Jersey School Buildings and Grounds Association (NJSBGA) and The Sustainability Institute at The College of New Jersey.

“We are proud of the leadership provided by the boards of education and their superintendents, principals, teachers, education support professionals and parents to make this important milestone a reality,” said Dr. Lawrence S. Feinsod, New Jersey School Boards Association executive director. “We congratulate the schools on achieving Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification.”

This first group of certified schools and school districts will be celebrated at a reception during the NJSBA Workshop 2015 Conference on October 27, 2015 in Atlantic City. Workshop 2015 will feature sessions on the Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification program along with NJSBA sustainability support programs for New Jersey schools. Attendees can visit the Sustainable Jersey for Schools’ booths in the Green Command Center and in the NJSBA member services area.
