Sustainable Jersey for Schools Announces Availability of $120,000 to Fund Health and Wellness Actions in Schools

Application process now open for grants funded by NJ Department of Health

Sustainable Jersey for Schools announced today that it is accepting grant applications from New Jersey public schools that serve students in grade six or above to do specific health and wellness actions. Funded by the New Jersey Department of Health, the Sustainable Jersey for Schools Small Grants Program will make $120,000 available to schools for this grant application cycle.

“These grants will support districts and schools that are registered with Sustainable Jersey for Schools as they tackle important health and wellness actions,” said Donna Drewes, who co-directs Sustainable Jersey with Randall Solomon. “Grant funding is especially important in this inaugural year of the Sustainable Jersey for Schools program as schools work to become certified for the first time.”

Application proposals are being accepted through Friday June 26, 2015. Visit grants page ( on to submit an online application. Applicants must be registered in the Sustainable Jersey for Schools program which is free and voluntary.

The Sustainable Jersey for Schools Small Grants Program will award thirty $4,000 grants to implement specific health and wellness actions in schools. The grant can be used to implement Sustainable Jersey for Schools actions such as: school gardens, staff wellness programs, asthma friendly schools, healthy food choices, programs to promote physical activity and more. The New Jersey Department of Health is funding the grants through its Maternal and Child Health Services Title V Block Grant. Technical assistance to grant recipients will be provided by three of the Department of Health’s regional partners:  AtlantiCare (south), Empower Somerset (central) and The Center for Prevention and Counseling (north).
