As part of its commitment to helping schools across New Jersey reach their sustainability goals, The New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA), in collaboration with Sustainable Jersey for Schools, is offering members and school district personnel opportunities to attend a one-day Sustainable Practices Working Session. In each session, participants will review a Sustainability Wellness Check, which aligns with the Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification program. Board members will receive four board member academy credits and four Green Leader credits for participating in a working session. Pre-registration is required and seats are limited.

The New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association's Foundation for Educational Administration, in collaboration with NJ Arts Education Partnership will host this six-part training series (2 workshops and 4 webinars) to immerse participants in the fundamental components of high-quality arts integration. Arts integration is an effective strategy for cultivating positive climate and culture, as well as deepening student engagement. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) training sessions are offered for school IPM Coordinators and other school personnel with administrative responsibilities in accordance with the new IPM laws. IPM Coordinators receive certification of attendance to fulfill the mandatory training requirement as stated in the NJDEP Pesticide Control Program regulations. These sessions help IPM Coordinators implement the new IPM law with regards to such things as: non-pesticide pest management, parental notification, the 72 hour notification rule, low-impact pest management; record keeping, and dealing with pest emergencies. Participants will receive 4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). This training support the Integrated Pest Management action toward Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification. Registration is free but limited and is on a first come, first served basis. Environmental Sustainability Education Teacher Summit

Green Infrastructure Champions Program

Green Infrastructure Champions are key players in implementing green infrastructure as a stormwater management approach town by town. Through this program, offered by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program, participants can attend one or more of the ten low-cost classes from January to May to learn how to identify green infrastructure locations, perform installations and maintenance, and more.  A session will be held on March 27 on green infrastructure projects for schools.  For more information, including all training topics, days, and times, visit the website.

NJ School of Conservation Teaching Scholar Program: Biodiversity Field Methods

This five-day summer professional development workshop for middle school teachers will focus on an extended hands-on experience in assessing ecosystem biodiversity. Teachers will work alongside academic researchers and professional scientists to identify flora and fauna in the forest, stream and lake ecosystems in and around the NJ School of Conservation (NJSOC) within Stokes State Forest. Teachers will learn field methods and improve their content knowledge in biology, ecology, and environmental science. Teachers will contribute to a NJSOC Bioblitz event scheduled to coincide with the workshop, allowing teachers to utilize the concept and curriculum materials for National Geographic’s and iNaturalists’s Bioblitz program. The concluding activity will be for the workshop participants to translate their newly developed skills to their classroom, school and local community by creating a lesson or unit plan that applies workshop learning.
