In the 2020-2021 school year middle and high school schools served by Atlantic City Electric in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem counties were invited to participate in the New Jersey Student Climate Challenge pilot project. The Challenge provided a hands-on engaging learning opportunity for students to not only build an understanding of climate change, but also to take action. Students were required to form a team and complete a home, school, or community project that addressed a cause or impact of climate change, document their progress, and create a short digital story video to share their accomplishments. Learning about climate issues and actions that are locally relevant and personally meaningful have been shown to have a long-lasting positive impact on students’ hopefulness towards their future and the future of our planet.

Team entries were due in June 2021. Over the summer the entries were reviewed by a panel of judges that included educators and representatives from non-profits, state agencies, and the partner organizations. Entries from students in grades 6 – 8 were placed in the Middle School category and students in grades 9 – 12 were placed in the High School category. Three finalists were selected in each category.
