Digital Schools Star Recognition

Overview

The Digital Schools Star program recognizes New Jersey public schools that are leaders in integrating technology into teaching, learning, and operations. Built on the foundation of the former Future Ready Schools-New Jersey (FRS-NJ) program, this initiative is now a key part of the Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification framework.

In partnership with the New Jersey Department of Education, the New Jersey School Boards Association, and endorsed by New Jersey Leadership for Educational Excellence, the Digital Schools Star identifies a set of 13 targeted actions in three focus areas that demonstrate excellence in applying technology to advance district and school goals. The focus areas include:

  • Digital Learning Leadership
  • Digital Learning Practices
  • Digital Technology Access

The actions guide schools in developing strong policies and practices around equity, digital citizenship, personalized learning, data privacy, and smart use of technology. The framework supports schools in identifying strengths and areas for improvement to help every student succeed in a digital world.

Why It's Important

During the COVID-19 pandemic, schools across the state rapidly expanded their use of digital tools. As many have shifted back to traditional methods, there's a risk of losing momentum. The Digital Schools Star program offers a clear path to maintain progress and keep up with evolving technology. It encourages collaboration across departments to support better planning, instruction, budgeting, and technology use.

Key Benefits

  • Leadership: Establish your school as a leader in digital integration, showcasing excellence in technology, planning, curriculum, and pedagogy.
  • Support: Utilize clear guidance and resources for effective and equitable digital integration.
  • Growth: Identify areas for improvement and advance your school’s technology initiatives.
  • Recognition: Gain additional recognition at the Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification awards ceremony.

Recognition and Resources

Participation is free and voluntary. For schools seeking Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification the Digital Schools actions contribute to achieving that goal. For schools already certified, successfully completing the digital schools actions counts towards higher levels of recognition in addition to the Digital Schools Star. Plus, schools can:

  • Access free resources, support, and grants.
  • Build on existing strengths—many schools already meet several criteria due to recent digital advancements.
  • Receive help every step of the way.

Get Started

Schools can begin at their own pace, building on what’s already in place and adding new actions over time. Participation and access to all resources are free. Schools and districts not currently participating in Sustainable Jersey for Schools are encouraged to register to:

  • Stay informed about the latest digital learning training, tools, and resources.
  • Access grants for capacity building or projects related to completing Sustainable Jersey for Schools actions.
  • Connect with peers following the same process and contribute to the larger community of digital learners.
