Research shows that place-based learning that focuses on the New Jersey-specific effects of climate change and the local actions that impact global trends are more likely to make a lasting impact on students. Funded by a grant from the NJ Department of Education, Sustainable Jersey and Rutgers Center for Math, Science, and Computer Education are developing supplemental teaching materials to support teachers in meeting that goal.
This workshop will demonstrate how to integrate relevant NJ-specific datasets related to climate change into the existing curriculum using OpenSciEd’s 7th-grade unit 6, Earth’s Resources and Human Impact, as a model. Through the model, participants will explore a variety of available datasets, discuss considerations in selecting appropriate datasets, and discover opportunities for engaging students by connecting course content with their everyday lives.
Breakfast and lunch provided by Sustainable Jersey. Attendees will receive 7 professional learning credit hours.
